About Garden UK
Garden UK is a gardening resource built for people who actually garden in Britain. Not California, not the Mediterranean. Here, where it rains sideways in April and the frost comes back in May just when you thought it was safe.
What we cover
We write about growing vegetables, garden design, plant care, pest control, and wildlife gardening. Every article is written with UK conditions in mind: our climate zones, our soil types, our growing seasons.
When we say "sow indoors in March", we mean a British March. When we recommend a plant, it grows in British gardens. We give measurements in millimetres, temperatures in Celsius, and we know the difference between a courgette and a zucchini (there isn't one, but we call it a courgette).
Our approach
Gardening advice should be specific and practical. We include real timings for UK regions, actual dimensions, and exact varieties that perform well in our climate. Vague advice helps nobody.
We cover everything from absolute beginners planting their first pot of herbs to experienced gardeners looking for specific guidance on pest identification or pruning technique.
Who writes Garden UK
Garden UK is written by Lawrie Ashfield, a West Midlands gardener with over 30 years of hands-on experience. Lawrie started on his grandfather's allotment as a child and has been growing, experimenting, and making mistakes ever since.
He grows most of his own vegetables using no-dig methods, maintains a wildlife-friendly garden, and has a particular interest in companion planting and getting the most from small spaces. He is an RHS member and a firm believer that good gardening advice has to be specific to where you actually garden.
Editorial standards
Every article is fact-checked against RHS guidance and established horticultural practice. We reference specific cultivars, cite growing data from UK trial grounds, and update articles when conditions or best practice change.
We don't accept payment for product recommendations. If we review a tool or recommend a variety, it's because we think it's genuinely good.
