Aylsham Garden Centre
Norwich, Norfolk
Norwich and the villages around it hold nearly half of the Norfolk garden centres listed here, so anyone living in or near the city has plenty of choice within a short drive. Breckland, in the south west of the county, has the next biggest group, and there are a couple each around Dereham, Great Yarmouth, Downham Market and Diss.
The rest are spread thinly across market towns such as Wymondham, Thetford, Fakenham, Holt, North Walsham and Harleston, which is typical of such a large rural county. Notcutts Norwich and Mousehold Garden Centre are both in Norwich, Peter Beales Roses Ltd is listed in Breckland, and Bressingham Garden Centre is at Bressingham near Diss. In north and west Norfolk the distances between places are greater, so check the map before setting off and consider combining a visit with a trip into the nearest market town.

Norfolk is one of the driest counties in England, with much lower rainfall than the west of the country, so drought-tolerant planting and water butts make a real difference. Soils vary a lot. Breckland around Thetford has light, sandy, quick-draining ground and is known for cold nights and frosts even in late spring. Much of mid and south Norfolk has heavier clay loams, while the north coast brings salty winds and exposure. Mulching every spring helps sandy soils hold moisture, and lavender, rosemary, sedums and ornamental grasses are reliable choices for many Norfolk gardens.
In a county this dry, the best garden centres stock plenty of drought-tolerant perennials and grasses and staff who can tell you which ones need watering through their first summer. Look at the soil improvers on offer too: bulk bags of compost or manure are worth pricing up if you are on Breckland sand. Some Norfolk nurseries specialise, in roses, heathers or particular perennials, and are worth the drive for those plants. Ask whether tender plants have been hardened off before buying in spring, because a late frost in an exposed garden can undo a hasty purchase.
Garden UK lists 45 garden centres in Norfolk, spread across 16 towns and villages including Norwich, Breckland, Dereham. Each listing shows the address and contact details on file, and owners can claim their listing to add opening hours and photos.
Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, rosemary and sage do well, along with sedums, salvias, verbena bonariensis and many ornamental grasses. Water new plants well in their first year, then most will cope with Norfolk's low rainfall once their roots are established.
It can be, but it needs help. Breckland soil is often very sandy and free-draining, so it dries out quickly and loses nutrients. Adding plenty of compost or well-rotted manure, and mulching each year, makes a big difference to what grows well there.
Usually from late May, once the risk of frost has passed. Breckland and other inland, low-lying spots can get frosts later than the coast, so harden plants off for a week or two and watch the forecast before planting out bedding and vegetables.
