Why visit Abbotsford?

Abbotsford is the house Sir Walter Scott built for himself on the banks of the River Tweed near Melrose, and it is as much a monument to his imagination as a home. The novelist and poet bought the farm here in 1811 and spent the following years turning it into a romantic baronial mansion, filling it with his collections. The gardens are part of the same vision, and today they are an RHS partner garden, which tells you they are worth more than a quick glance on the way into the house.

A visit usually combines the house with a walk round the gardens and grounds. Close to the house is a walled garden, which gives shelter and colour in the Borders climate, and the grounds lead down towards the Tweed, so you can enjoy views of the river that Scott loved. The setting of house, garden and river together is what makes the place memorable.

For home gardeners, the walled garden is the part to study for ideas on borders and sheltered planting in a cooler northern garden. The grounds and riverside also suit anyone who simply wants a peaceful walk after touring Scott's rooms. Abbotsford is close to Melrose, so it combines well with a day in the Borders, including Melrose Abbey and other historic sites nearby. Check the official information for what is open, as house and garden opening can differ through the year.

The story behind the garden

Sir Walter Scott, the author of Waverley and many other novels and poems, bought a modest farm on the south bank of the River Tweed near Melrose in 1811. Over the following years he rebuilt it as Abbotsford, a house in the Scottish baronial style that reflected his love of history, and laid out gardens around it. He lived there until his death in 1832.

Abbotsford stayed in the hands of Scott's descendants for generations and has long been open to visitors. Today the house and grounds are cared for by a charitable trust, and the estate is a member of Historic Houses and an RHS partner garden, recognising the gardens as well as the house. It remains one of the best-known literary homes in Scotland.
