Why visit Bluebell Cottage Gardens?
Bluebell Cottage Gardens is a quiet, homely garden down a rural lane in Cheshire, a few minutes' drive from the M56. It is owned and managed by Sue Beesley with a small team, and it sits right next to a nursery. That pairing is the real draw: the borders show many of the hardy perennials sold next door at full size, and most nursery plants are propagated from the garden itself, so you can see a plant grown on before you buy it.
The planting is in relaxed drifts through wide borders, with no annual bedding. At the top of the garden the beds run from tulips in spring through summer herbaceous colour to late-season grasses, and a small summerhouse looks over them. The orchard has apple and pear trees above a perennial wildflower meadow of ox-eye daisies, clover and wild carrot. Gravel beds in the centre hold sun lovers such as pulsatillas, baptisias and eryngiums. A pergola leads through the old cottage garden and a bold exotic-style area of bananas, bamboos and palms to a brick arched gateway and the walled garden, built in 2022 from reclaimed Cheshire brick, with a greenhouse, vegetables and fruit including apricots and damsons. A moongate then opens into a cool woodland garden of shade-loving perennials.
Gardeners with ordinary-sized plots will find plenty to copy here, from gravel planting for dry sunny spots to shade combinations and wildlife-friendly choices. The garden is run without pesticides or chemical fertilisers, has two ponds, and plants are chosen for pollen, seed and winter shelter as well as looks. Many plants are labelled, and staff in the nursery are happy to identify anything you cannot name.

- The garden has a set open season, so check the official site for the dates before planning a visit outside the main growing months.
The story behind the garden
Bluebell Cottage Gardens is a privately run garden and nursery owned and managed by Sue Beesley, working with a small team of staff. The garden was planted to show off hardy perennials at their mature size, and it doubles as the stock garden for the nursery next door, where most plants are propagated from what grows in the borders.
The garden has kept growing. The most recent large addition is the walled garden, built in 2022 entirely from reclaimed Cheshire brick, which now holds a greenhouse and most of the garden's own fruit and vegetables. The approach throughout has been to garden for wildlife as well as colour, with no pesticides or chemical fertilisers, no annual bedding, and plants chosen for their value to insects and birds. Over 50 bird species are seen in a typical year. The neighbouring bluebell woods are opened to visitors during the flowering season in spring.
