Why visit Dunvegan Castle & Gardens?
Dunvegan is a castle first, but its formal gardens are a real surprise on the west coast of Skye. The castle stands on a rock above an inlet of Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch, and has been the home of the chiefs of Clan MacLeod for around 800 years. Its owners describe it as the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland.
The gardens lie beside the castle and give shelter and colour in a landscape that is otherwise open and windswept. They include a walled garden and a water garden, and walking them is a good lesson in what can be grown in an exposed Hebridean setting with the help of walls, trees and careful planting. Allow time to wander slowly, as the gardens are quite different in mood from the castle rooms, which hold family heirlooms such as the Fairy Flag and the Dunvegan Cup.
One of the best parts of a visit is the boat trip from the castle to see the Loch Dunvegan seal colony, so check whether trips are running on the day. There are shops with local and Scottish gifts and the MacLeod Tables Cafe for something to eat. Bring waterproofs: Skye weather changes fast, and the gardens are at their best when you can take your time. The castle and gardens open for the main season, roughly spring to mid autumn, and there is no need to pre-book admission tickets.

The story behind the garden
The promontory at Dunvegan was enclosed by a curtain wall in the thirteenth century, and a four-storey tower house followed in the late fourteenth century. Around 1500, the 8th chief, Alasdair Crotach, added the Fairy Tower, and new ranges were built between the towers in the seventeenth century.
From the late eighteenth century, successive chiefs gave the castle a single, unified look, adding mock battlements and a new approach from the east. This baronial remodelling was finished around 1840 and gives the castle its present appearance. Dunvegan remains the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, and today the castle, gardens and estate are open to visitors, with the 30th Chief of Clan MacLeod welcoming the public.
