Why visit Helmsley Walled Garden?

Helmsley Walled Garden is a working garden with a long history, and that is what makes it worth a stop on a visit to this North Yorkshire market town. The five-acre garden was built in 1756, soon after the family moved out of Helmsley Castle into Duncombe Park, and it is being restored as a working kitchen garden. The restoration uses appropriate plants wherever possible, so what you see is a historic space being brought back to use rather than a museum piece.

Inside the walls, the scale is the first thing to take in. Five acres gives room for beds, paths and borders, and the old walls shelter the planting and hold warmth, which is exactly why gardens like this were built. Look for the glasshouses, which began life in 1850 as a vine house and are one of the oldest features on the site. Because restoration is ongoing, each visit can show a little more progress, and it is interesting to see how a historic walled garden is put back into cultivation step by step.

Kitchen gardeners will get the most from it. Notice how the walls create sheltered corners for tender crops, how paths divide the space into workable sections, and how glass extends the growing season. The garden sits in Helmsley, a compact town on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, so it pairs easily with the castle ruins, the market place and the start of the Cleveland Way. Check the official information before you travel for current facilities and what is in season.

The story behind the garden

The Duncombe family bought Helmsley in about 1689 and built Duncombe Park outside the town, overlooking the ruins of Helmsley Castle. A walled garden serving the castle had earlier stood along the banks of the river to the south. Soon after the family moved from the castle to Duncombe Park, this walled garden was built, in 1756.

In 1850 a vine house was added, and its glass houses survive within the garden today. Like many Victorian kitchen gardens, it later fell out of its original use. It is now being restored as a working kitchen garden, with a programme that uses appropriate plants where possible, so the restoration is a continuing story rather than a finished one.
