Why visit Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden?
Kylemore's walled garden is a remarkable sight in the wild Connemara countryside. It was laid out in 1870 for Mitchell Henry, who built Kylemore Castle as a family home, and it shows how a wealthy Victorian household grew flowers, fruit and vegetables in a remote and rugged place. After years of decline, the garden has been carefully restored since 1995, so you see it much as it was intended.
The garden is divided into two main parts. The flower garden is the formal, decorative side, with bedding and ornamental planting set out in the Victorian manner. The kitchen garden is the productive side, where vegetables, fruit and herbs are grown as they would have been for the house. Walking between them gives a clear picture of how a Victorian estate garden worked, with walls giving shelter from the Atlantic weather. Beyond the garden, the estate includes the castle, now the abbey, and the Gothic chapel and mausoleum that Mitchell Henry built in memory of his wife Margaret.
Gardeners will find the kitchen garden the most useful part, with ideas on laying out beds and growing in a walled space. The flower garden shows Victorian bedding at its most orderly. The estate is also a working Benedictine monastery, home to nuns since 1920, which gives the whole place a calm atmosphere. Wear comfortable shoes, as the estate is large and the weather in Connemara can change quickly.

The story behind the garden
Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor from London, bought the land after honeymooning in Connemara, and built Kylemore Castle from 1867. The walled garden was laid out in 1870 by his head gardener James Garnier. After Henry's wife Margaret died in 1874 he spent less time at Kylemore, and he built a Gothic chapel and mausoleum in her memory. The castle was sold to the Duke and Duchess of Manchester in 1903.
In 1920 Benedictine nuns who had fled Ypres in the First World War bought the castle and lands, and it became Kylemore Abbey. The gardens have been open for public tours since the 1970s, and a full restoration of the walled garden began in 1995. The estate is now held by the Kylemore Trust, and the abbey joined the English Benedictine Congregation in 2022.
